How many bands would dare to open their album with a thirteen minute long symphonic composition? Probably not that many, or maybe you would say that no one would be that stupid. Well, Lacrimosa dared, and I must confess, that after listening through the entire album, it was a perfect move. "Kyrie", as the song in entitled is the perfect opener in many ways. It's like the first scene in a movie, if it wasn't there you would feel as if something was missing. You can simply say that you need it to make the movie, or in this case, the album complete.

Lacrimosa use a large scale orchestra as well as a regular line-up. This of course contributes to making the music feel more genuine and alive, than if they would have made it all on computers. I have heard several examples of bands trying to make this kind of music on machines, and in most cases it just sounds plain and you have the feeling that something is missing when you listen to it.

So far it probably sounds as if I'm pretty fond of this album, but no, I have to say that I'm not. Sure, the beautiful opera-like opening track is great and the production of the entire album is excellent. What I don't like is the songs that follows, it's way too much metal for my taste. I've always thought that goth should be goth. Not some sort of heavy metal with goth vibes. I can imagine though that many people will like this album, most of the songs have great melodies and are very catchy from time to time. Of course it's not metal with heavy guitars all the way through, just enough for me to call it gothic metal. And as far as I am concerned though, "Echos" make Lacrimosa a number one of that genre.
