Great records are rare these days. Especially since everything seems to have been done already. But once in a while (for me, about once a year), something new, good and interesting is released. The Austrian duo Mind.In.A.Box debut "Lost Alone” came last year and made a so-so impression. It was a good record but lacked good hooks and lasting appeal. “Dreamweb” is everything where “Lost Alone” missed out.
Mind.In.A.Box is something that is rare today. Instead of financial gain, publicity and fame they care, like and put their music in first hand focus. This is obvious by the way they deliberately attempt to avoid photos, interviews and even live performances. It’s a quality that shines through and reflects in their music. That is probably also the reason why they dare to do something that sounds new and fresh, putting some true feelings to it. Sure, it has some futurepop elements, but they take it to another level and a complete different genre. Their songs are more epic not always according to the standard formula with an intro - chorus and so on. Sometimes it feels like a song has been on for ages because you really can't tell where in a song you are for the moment. And that is a good thing, something that won't let you get tired of the songs that easy. Always surprising you, letting you dream away through their dreamweb either you have listened to it for 3 or 50 times.
The description for “Dreamweb” at Ground Under Productions website says it all very well: "Dreamweb places multifaceted electronics, diversity, and harmonized vocals squarely in the foreground. Behind the fragile mix of techno, electro, and ambient lies a wealth of expressive power and emotion that reveals itself only through careful, multiple listenings, like a fine painting that leaves room for interpretation, divulging its beauty piece by piece."
There are not 3 or 4 great songs here... There are 7! “Certainty”, “Lament for Lost”, “Machine Run”, “Sun and Storm”, “Out of Time”, “The Dream”, “Escape” - 7/12 fantastic songs and the rest isn't bad either!
This must be the most beautiful and strong album so far this year.

I agree with the initial review. The album just seems to grow on you more and more each time you listen to it. I've been listening to the album for three months now, which is rare cause I get tired of tracks quick. I cant wait for the next release.
Funkin Great!

Even with the 80's retro sounding vocals, it's just as good as their first album (which was mind blowing).
Lost Alone?

Im surprised 'Lost Alone' didnt make a huge impression. Think it was one of the best albums of the year. Even though some of the lyrics are pretty basic it's wonderfully structured and I found the music sticks in your mind like glue. I still cant stop listening to it on a daily basis. Am I lost alone in this?
good review

only one gripe -- you forgot to mention "loyalty," which i feel is the best song on the album. it has such a lovely melody. mind.in.a.box is one of those rare acts, much like covenant, that manages to elevate EBM to more than mere club fodder.
a breath of fresh air

i agree that this is a fantastic release. it completely avoids the cliche's of popular ebm trends but manages to stay both danceable and accessible. while it is certainly no clone i think it would appeal to fans of diary of dreams, or those who miss evil's toy.
ebm/electro-industrial desperately needs new acts with fresh ideas, and mind in a box certainly succeeds with this release.
