Is it just I, or are we not all done with electro clash? That is not for me to tell but I know one thing by now: a couple of German chicks with punky voices are not quite enough to overwhelm me in the year of 2005. Compare it to the most accessible Beatles songs. If any other band would make a record consisting of such songs, let’s face it; only their parents would buy it. It is about the same with electro clash and Cobra Killer. When electro clash was hyped, all of it was “terrific”, today we actually want it to be good music as well. Most of the Chicks on Speed and Peaches tunes produced in the late 90’s and early 00’s are cute, but so is “Can’t buy me love”.

Cobra Killer’s latest record 76/77 is based upon good old-fashioned experimental hard-core electronica. It is not very far from electro clash. And what used sound new, fun and cool, now turns out to be just rather meaningless lyrics added to the same drums that we all are quite a bit too familiar with. Only one thing makes me a little interested in the future of Cobra Killer. Namely the tracks “L.A. Shaker” and “High is the Pine” which have a exquisite touch of Pulp Fiction and Rocky Horror Picture Show. I would probably enjoy their music more if they got rid of their cocky attitude and focused more on the soundtrack sounding er…sound.
