This is a tree track single and Excession’s third release and contains the a-side ”The writing on the wall”, the b-side ”Souls” and a remix of the a-side by Grant Ferraira. Earlier releases are the full-length album ”Forever” and the MCD ”Jong & Huga”. Excession is a London based duo with Yasmin on vocals and Dave on guitar.
The vocals on this single are a sad experience. The pitch is too high (right in your ear) and in some cases really false like she just entered puberty (like a boy). The melodies for the vocals are not thought through. Simple, they follow the basic harmonies and are just irritating. I like the rest of it all though. It is goth like early Clan of Xymox with lots of toms and reverb saturated guitars. However I would like more distinct guitar melodies like on their earlier stuff.
The remix is a story for itself. It reminds me of some Depeche Mode remixes where some fancy DJ or producer has slaughtered the song. But this remix turns out ok and Yasmins vocal fits strangely into this concept, maybe it is the elements of electroclash in the remix. A style change might be in an option (electroclash!) or have a producer that can hide flaws on the vocals.
