After the teaser single “Let the wind erase me” we were told that a storm was coming, and what a storm it was. Assemblage 23’s fourth studio album sees Tom Shear take his melodic EBM (by some called FuturePop, a term that Tom hates) to new levels. The album is packed tight with nine soon to be floor fillers. Apart from the single “Let the wind erase me” tracks such as “Human”, “Ground” (the upcoming single track) and “You haven’t earned it” are bound to get people dancing everywhere.
Having created an album full of potential club hits means that the beat per minute average is high, most tracks are in the range of 130 to 140 bpm. This in turn means that the tempo variations are almost non-existent, and a track like “Complacent” feels slow and you loose some of the up-tempo feel when listening to the album as a whole. The sound has become more layered and refined, you can tell that Tom has risen to a new level in his musical craft.
The one slower track that we are treated to, is "30kft", and it’s a brilliant track, portraying a man on an airplane about to crash, calling home to his loved ones. This track is extremely creepy, I know people who just can’t stand listening to it, and so unlike anything you would expect from Assemblage 23. It’s really nice to see Tom trying out the waters with other moods and variations, and I think that one or two slower interludes would have improved the impression of the album.
This is an excellent dance album, which is probably what Tom set out to create, so if you like melodic EBM, than you should get it. In November we’ll see the next single, “Ground”, and it will get the same treatment as “Let the wind erase me”, that is, Tom will do three different versions of the track, one being acoustic, and it will also include two exclusive tracks.

Reader Opinions
A very consistent, satisfying album.

Although it doesn't have the emotional depth of Failure, this is still really great stuff. Pretty much every track is club friendly as well as being something you can just listen to around the house. Every song is of good quality - however my only complaint is that the album doesn't really change very much in tone at all throughout (except for the wonderful track at the end) ...but if what you're looking for is something filled with tracks that could pack a dancefloor, this is the album for you.
The best

To me, this is the best A23 album released so far. Its my favorite album, and no ones gonna change my fuckin' mind. Oh yeah, TOM SHEAR IS THE MAN!!!!
Awesome !

I've been playing it non-stop for a week and can't get enough ! A23 at his best, at least if you're more into danceable, high bpm synthpop ebm as I am. Far better than Defiance, at the same range with Failure. Go grab it !
I'm addicted!

This is the first A23 album I ever heard! So I can't compareit to the other ones but what I can say is...I loved it! I'm addicted! It made me want to go out there and get the other ones too.
always complaining...boooo...boooo

this album is a good one, not the best one but definitely a good one. You find there is too much electronic production these days? You can afford to loose a band like these? Go fuck madonna and let the real fans enjoy.
Playing it safe and even worse then his debuts

I totally agree with "kallisti-93". The first two albums were outstanding. But it seemes like A23 is doing nothing to develope his sound and playing it safe and even worse then his debuts. The result can only be plain, boring and uninspiring - 5/10

A23 as A23? What did you expect A23 to sound like? Of course it's going to sound like A23! He found a good sound, so why mess with something that works this well this time around?
Better than expected!

The single made me a bit suspicious, but the album proved them all wrong. A very good album! There's something in it that reminds me of Depeche Mode, but in a good way. A23 hasn't been this good since the release of 'Contempt'.
truth

Bufff, its the same again, the same formule of Future Pop. I think he doesnt progress on his music. It´s sound nice but nothing nothing more.
His latest album were much better that this one.
Eh...

It's not outstanding, but treads on the same ground he set down with "Failure". His first two discs were outstanding, but Mr. Shear needs to be a bit more courageous in his writing.
In short, good but too familiar.
Excellent

Definitely the best from A23 yet. The last track, although borrows a lot from Legendary Pink Dots from their All The King's Horses album, is really a standout. Excellent, really excellent stuff. Check out for the single as well.
Not for me...
Name: Horizontal Theory (164.82.144.3) Rating: 3
"Contempt", "Failure" and "Defiance" were MUCH better albums....this album ranks at the bottom for me....hopefully the "Ground" ep won't be as disappointing as this album, along with "Let the wind erase me"
I Told You Guys It Would Be Good... :P

This CD hasn't left my player very much since I got it. The only thing I would have liked to see is a couple more slower songs, but on the whole, I think this is the best A23 ever.
Yeah!
