Darkseed has through the last ten years worked their way to the very top of the European gothic metal scene and is one of the most interesting bands in the genre today. A proof of that is this album. It doesn't contain anything that's really new but it's got all the necessary parts to form gothic metal. Heavy guitars, a deep voice that sometimes walks over the line between singing and growling (in a very effective way), huge landscapes of synthetic strings and sweeps, and tons of female choirs. All of it extremely well produced. Not as much as a single noise that's not meant to be there. When it comes to production, and this is said out of my own experiences, remember: Less is more. It's not really necessary to create that clinically clean sound. A little roughness would make this far more interesting. Especially since we're talking about guitars and acoustic drums here.
The music is, I suppose, intended to be atmospheric but unfortunately it never really gets there. As soon as my mind starts travelling with the music the song ends rather abruptly or the music changes radically. The latter sure makes the record to one of the non-boring kind as well as it makes it kind of hard getting a grip of. I also find the lack of good melodies a little annoying, the vocalist is brilliant but he never really gets the chance to show it. The monotonous singing sometimes kills the excitement of the very melodic music. But on the whole this is one of the most interesting gothic metal albums I've been listening to for a long time. Darkseed's probably just gonna grow bigger and better and I'm very curious about what's gonna come next from these talented Germans.
