I'm actually pretty nervous when I press play and the latest effort from Nick Cave and
the Bad Seeds slowly find its way through my speakers. I think to myself how sad
I would be if this album turns out to be plain and boring. After a couple of seconds
into "Wonderful Life" I'm about to beat myself up for thinking such a ridiculous thought.
On the other hand, how could I not think such a thing, I thought that the last album "No More
Shall We Part" was the ultimate Nick Cave album, that it could only go downhill from there.
Well, I can say right away that "Nocturama" is not as good as that one, but then you must
have in mind that this is a different kind of album. It's more straight forward than ever
before, the melodies and the lyrics goes straight to your heart without taking fifty detours
before it gets there. If you think about it this way, then "Nocturama" is just as brilliant
as "No More Shall We Part", but in a different way.
I'm some what surprised that they have picked "Bring It On" as the first single to be
lifted from the album. You have to forgive me for saying this, but that song has too many
Bruce Springsteen vibes going on for me to enjoy it at 100%. A much better choice would have
been the almost too beautiful song "Rock of Gibraltar", or why not "He Wants You"? Those songs
are truly Nick Cave at his best.
The whole feeling of "Nocturama" is very warm and it almost feels as if the band is in my
living room when I listen to it. It has to say the least a very live feeling, mainly because
most of the album is actually recorded live in the studio over a period of just seven days.
I wish that more musicians would realize that you don't have to spend a year in the studio
going over every little detail a hundred times. "Nocturama" is a perfect example that it's not
always necessary, but maybe it also has to do with how good a musician you are...
I'm happy to say that my nervousness is long gone, and that Nick Cave is a brilliant poet
and musician. I know though that I will have that exact same feeling when the next album arrives,
but let's not worry about that now. All I know is that when Nick Cave closes the album singing
"Babe, I'm On Fire" for almost fifteen minutes, he's absolutely right!
