This year couldn't have started better. Every time I get an album like this in my hands I cherish the moment like it was the last. Because many times it feels like it is, I mean, honestly, how often do you hear a CD that feels so fresh and extraordinary like "Deep Cuts" by Swedish act The Knife? I for one do not experience it that often. Brother and sister Dreijer has managed to put together an album that is even more brilliant than their debut album "The Knife" that was released two years ago. For one thing, this one is a bit more easy to listen to, with very catchy melodies all the way through.
The band has listed Miss Kitten, Kate Bush and Queen as some of the influences when making the album, but it wouldn't have been that hard to figure this out for your self, as it is quite obvious. Especially Karin Dreijer's vocal style that at times sounds a lot like Kate Bush's. I'm no big fan of the latter, but together with The Knife's music it works out great.
The opener "Heartbeats" (also the second single) is just fantastic, and you feel right away this is not just another cliché 80's band. It does though have a very 80's sound, but still the music manages to sound really fresh and new. "Pass It On" is in many ways a sleazy love song, but Karin's fragile voice makes it the most beautiful song I've heard in a long time. The strange high pitched choirs makes it even more beautiful and
strange.
The real hit of the album must be the duet with First Floor Power's Jenny Wilson; "You
Take My Breath Away". This is one of those songs that just blow you away with its intensity and excellent melodies. Part from sounding like Kate Bush the Björk type of vocals that has become synonymous with Karin is still present. Especially in the kind of weird and bizarre "You Make Me Feel Like Charity".
I must admit that when I first heard The Knife I wasn't blown away right from the beginning.
I actually felt that Karin Dreijer's voice was a bit annoying, but it took only about twenty minutes until I was completely in love with the band, and if you're not already are, I know that you will be.

Name: electro guy (211.26.244.182) Rating: 6
the knife album is good, but as for being new and fresh it isn't. i would look to warp records and electronica producers such as plaid, black dog and autechre to find something new and inspirational as early as the mid 80's.
Thank U all my Kisses

Now for real springtime! While everything is changeing I loved your music since I first heard it, in my friends kitchen. One like to push and scream... I dance infront of a gigant mirror. Sun is shining and yes, we are in the middel of something. Thank you it´s so sexy! greetings from Hamburg where ever you are Kisses

"Heartbeats" and "You Take My Breath Away" are 2 of the best songs i've heard in years...they get into your head and eat away at you, forcing you to listen to them over and over...and you never get sick of it...absolutely brilliant, and karins voice is perfect.
