This is allegedly, a collection of songs that are considered "fun" or "odd" compared to the band's conventional releases. As I haven't heard these, I can't really judge if that is the case or not. I should also admit, that this brand of music is not really my cup of tea. I have listened to some punk when I was a teenager and I am very fond of post-punk acts, like Play Dead, for instance, but Ska has never appealed to me. The music played by the German act Rantanplan is best described as poppy Ska-punk. Now, some of you might think of American acts like No Doubt or Smashmouth, but that is not an accurate comparison at all. Rantanplan definitely has a lot more edge and roughness in their music and it all seem more true than these mentioned bands that are, in my opinion, extremely commercialised.

What we are given here on "Tresenthesen", music wise, is a collection of up-tempo, quite danceable songs that combine simple guitar chords, a brass section and groovy rhythms. The fun-factor is, I must admit, quite high and I can't help enjoying this album somewhat. It is catchy, well performed, well produced and quite original.

When I reach the final track, there is no longer any doubt about the humorous intentions of this release. The track "Disco-Kalle" is, believe it or not, just as the title claims, a disco track, in true seventies fashion, combined with a very modest amount of punk elements. This is, ironically, perhaps the most punkish song of the entire album, since punk is all about rebellion and I, for one, can't think of any greater rebellion than mixing punk with a heavy dose of cheesy seventies disco à la Bee Gees.
