This is the first album from our Swedish pioneers of electronic music on a major label and it's also a huge change in their sound. Covenant have since their first album "Dreams Of A Cryotank" delivered everything from pounding EBM-beats to ambient electronic landscapes. During the years, they have evolved strongly with each album making sure that the new release does not sound like the old ones.
This album is the first Covenant album where an outside producer, Jakob Hellner, has been used. This has been reflected in the sound that is not so very "clubbish" anymore but instead more directed towards the melodies. Eskil's singing has become a lot better. Tracks like "Bullet" (the next single), "Promotheus" and "Winter Comes" really show his vocal talent. The album is also a lot slower than previous ones.
The only track that reminds me of previous Covenant releases is the first single "Call The Ships To Port" which has a cunning resemblance to older favourites like "Stalker" and "Tour De Force". The rest of the album sounds like a totally new Covenant, but still, really good. The only song I have problems with is the song "We Want Revolution", which is too corny for my taste. In addition, the album slows down a bit too much in the end. Nevertheless, it's still worth my praise and probably one of my favourite releases in 2002.

Featuring some of the best songs ever written by Covenant, Northern Light is a strong album, filled with many good songs. The first side of the album is real killer, but guys didn't manage to keep the strength until the end. Last songs are extreme bore.
bad finish

Covenant still improves from record to record, this is better then most (all?) of their previous releases. Even though I still think Eskils voice is not as good as it should be. Bullet is one hell of a song. I just ordered the single, hope to get it soon.
And yes, the copy-protection suxs, the cd refuses to play on my dvd on my lap. :(
