Mexican act Cenobita are no newcomers to the electronic music scene. They have in fact been together since 1994, but only released one album prior to this one (if you don't count a couple of demo tapes), namely "Neo Milenio". Cenobita started out as a two-man act but now only consists of Claus Bita.
It's no surprise to me when I put the "Metamorfosis" disc in the CD-player and I find out that Cenobita sounds a lot like fellow Mexicans Hocico. They have a lot in common,
like the same distorted vocal styles and fast melodies laid over heavy beats. But despite
this they don't sound like a bleak copy of Hocico. Sure, the vocal styles are alike, but
Cenobita use in fact two different styles. First of course the heavily distorted one, but also a harsh, early Wumpscut kind of sound. The two mixed together sounds really great. You can tell on almost all of the tracks that Bita is trying to make up his own sound, and most of the time it works. The two most obvious influences I have already mentioned; Hocico and Wumpscut. But as I said Cenobita doesn't sound like a copy but instead a great complement for fans of that kind of bands.
The first track on "Metamorfosis" is called "On Line Trinity" and it's a great song to start off the album. It shows the listener right away what awaits them. It has a really catchy chorus and a great melody. Five of the nine tracks are sung in Spanish, which I think is a great language for this kind of music. It makes the song sound even more energetic and the vocals sound more furious in some way. If you've heard Hocico (you should have), you probably know what I'm talking about. It's pretty hard to pick favourites on this album since none of the songs are bad, but not so many stick out much from the rest either. "Estrellas" though, is one of the fastest and heaviest tracks on the entire CD, so I guess that makes it kind of a favourite. One cool thing Cenobita has done is to include a new version of "Niño Atómico" from their first demo tape "Cybertuality". I haven't heard the original, so I can't compare, but if the band made tracks like these back in 1994-95 I can't begin to comprehend why they didn't get a record deal earlier...
Cenobita are not original in that many ways, but then it's kinda hard to be original and innovative in this genre. They are a really promising band that I'm sure you will like. I have listened to this album many times now and I'm not bored with it yet. I don't think you will be either...
