Resistance!
The international anarchic panzer guerrilla is here.
KMFDM are back with a new album and a line-up which includes the old shotgun messiah himself Tim Skold, alongside Ministry's Bill Rieflin and Drill's Lucia Cifarelli.
En Esch and Gunther abandoned the uprising to form Slick Idiots.
So what's new? Not much. We still recognise the typical KMFDM sound and the superego revolutionaries urging us to break free and release ourselves from the shackles of standard and norm. Still, the influences, of the more or less new members, are evident. An example is Skold's "Save Me", neatly balancing on the edge between cheesy power ballad and a reflective moment in the eye of the riot. Bring your lighter to the show.
The songs have become more guitar driven and the beats are often of a more complex nature. Though I must say that sometimes they sound outdated, old, but used in this context, the experience feels fresh.
The contributions of Lucia Cifarelli are noteworthy, and her addition to KMFDM I'm sure, will prove to be one of the best things that has happened to this band.
The opening track "Attak/Reload" could well be the best thing we'll hear this year.
Unfortunately the album lacks something, but what that something is, I'm not sure of.
Maybe it's substance, the album feels a little shallow. Yes, that's it. KMFDM want the album to make us commit, but still it's hard to take them seriously.
Anyway, it's an album worth to buy.
It transcends genres and could, fortune willing, find it's way to a broader audience.
"Risen" will definitely fill dacefloors around the world. Or as KMFDM express it "a small step for man, a giant leap for rock'n'roll".

Over and Over and Over and Over...

As much as I like KMFDM, Attak just doesn't offer enough to hold onto. On the surface, the slick production, chugging guitars and jungle-tinged beats offer promise, but here the songwriting for the most part falls flat. Highlights include "Save Me," a power ballad that straddles the line between melodic Type O Negative goth sludge and cheesy 80's hair metal; "Preach/Pervert," a more classic-KMFDM sounding track featuring familiar anti-religious lyrics; "Risen," a great, catchy number in the vein of "Anarchy"; and "Attak/Reload," a nice departure for KMFDM that very nearly fails but forces its way in your head. The rest of this CD is merely interesting filler; a nice time-waster, but it won't change your life, or your views of the band for that matter.
Could've been better

As much as I like this record (other than Skurk and Save Me, those songs are awful), it is missing En Esch and Günter Schulz. Esch's weirdness and Günter's aggressive guitars were the core of KMFDM, and this new album is begging for them. But even without E and G, this album could have been better. Hey Sascha! four words: More Raymond, Less Skold.
Skold writes stupid, cheesy lyrics and doesn't belong in the band. Not that KMFDM has ever been known for great lyrics, but Skold's sound like he should be writing for Creed or Nickelback.
Still worth your twelve bucks, though.
Heared it all before

Totally mediocre. Heared it all before, but it is true that some songs are OK. Save me, Attak/Reload, Risen and Preach/Pervert are all average listenable songs. The only question is: can KMFDM ever manage to produce anything like the albums "Money", "Naive" and "Angst" again?
KMFDM is back or are they?

One of the best bands on earth are back and it's a pretty good cd, but is it KMFDM as we know it? I have to say no. I keep listening to this album and think that it's just not as engaging as previous KMFDM releases. It may be better than most the crap released this year but still how hard is that with all the horrible music out there now a days. Ok, when I heard "Back in the USSA" I thought I was going to need to change my pants. That song blew me away because it sounded totally new yet kept the vibe of KMFDM. I was totally excited to hear Attak and when I did I was left a little disappointed because nothing made me feel the way the Boots single did. Most songs on Attak are average or slightly above average for KMFDM, but a few are great. I must say "Save Me" is the one track that really stands out. Songs like "Risen" are great, but it's your typical "Witchhunt" and "DIY" song, nothing new. Overall the album doesn't feel like KMFDM. Any song which Raymond Watts sings sounds like a Pig song, any thing Skold sings alone on sounds like his solo album, same goes for Lucia especially knowing "Attak/Reload" and "Superhero" were meant to be on her upcoming solo album. Everything else seems too much like mdfmk to be a KMFDM release. It makes sense since it is basically the same group of people but Attak is missing something and that is it's own idenity as a KMFDM album. Every KMFDM cd has it's own distinctive vibe. This album just mirrors every members solo effort or latest side project. I had expected something completely fresh but still it is a rockin' cd so I can not recommend it to a hardcore fan but I don't think it'll gain any new ones.
Sweet Album

In some ways it reminds me of the MDFMK album, but with the old KMFDM feel in it as well, its rather hard to describe. Definitely worth buying, Not a bad song on the album in my opinion. "Attak/Reload" "Save me" "Superhero" "Risen"
More Watts in the USSA

As far as KMFDM cds go, this is better than Symbols or Xtort, though leagues below Nihil or Naive: Hell to Go. Something's missing and that something is the flair and funk that En Esch brought to the table. Skold's guitar playing, while decent, is often too simple for its own good and already he's repeating a lot of the stuff we heard on MDFMK. Lucia's moment to shine is "Superhero" and shine she does on a song that is almost NOT KMFDM by normal standards. Even Raymond Watts himself is out to play, though his lyrics seem a bit tame and maybe even a bit more trite compared to his normal stuff or even some of the material used on Schwein. In the end, its a good cd, but no where near as great as the Slick Idiot Dicknity disc or the Schwein Schweinstein cd.
One of the better KMFDM releases to date

Risen by itself is worth buying this album for.

One of the best KMFDM CDs out there, very diverse and interesting. Not a bad song on it. Risen is just too sweet... Also, pick up Superstarved* by Gravity Kills...
Better than Adios

I like it, a lot. It took a while to get used to, especially odd tracks like Yohoho, but it's a great record and better than anything else you'll hear (except Slick Idiot).
Great album

It is a great album - leaving the worst of the 90s behind.
