"Decadance Vol I" is a sixty-eight minutes compilation of new and supposedly innovative darkwave electronics. Having listened to it repeatedly in attempt to distinguish the lasting quality and originality of the recording, I am compelled to admit that merely sparse moments manage to spark any measure of contribution and durable interest.
The first five songs blend together into one long twenty-minute pseudo dark, electro-dribbling track that delivers modest measures of unadulterated gratification. The first real contribution is davaNtage with the track "Evening Black". Here at last we are presented with something that could be described as Decadance. It’s harder, harsher and refreshing, a good track combining dark throbbing electronics with pulsating beats and overall good arrangements.
Additionally good tracks on this altogether mediocre but nonetheless average compilation are Black Sun with the track "Vortex", a contribution managing to merge the feeling of late eighties EBM with the more contemporary sounds of modern electronics. Ashram with the track "Entry into The Ashram", a genuinely beautiful track with sweeping, tangible strings bringing the track forward and forward until its very end; a notable track apparently misplaced. And finally Militia Christi with the track "Annus Domini", conclusively bringing this compilation to an end with the sweeping sound of dismal ambiance, whispering voices and children’s choirs.
Although the overall criticism of this compilation could be perceived as exclusively negative, Decadance is not an entirely bad accomplishment. It’s a careful, contemporary evidence of what this scene has to offer at present, but I surely know a handful of records that I would rather purchase.
