It was with mixed feelings that I put this CD in my stereo. I'd already heard some songs from this album and I thought some of them were great and some... well, not so great. I mean, "Advance and Follow" was a masterpiece, and so was "Praise the Fallen", but when "Empires" came, I felt the band had lost something. I couldn't really point to what it was, but something was missing.
Whatever it was, they've found it, 'cause I'm in love with Ronan and Mark once again. This album is almost exactly like I was hoping it would be. Of course not every song is brilliant, but none of them are bad either. It starts with the introtrack "Foreword" which is the same intro as they used on their last tour. After you've heard it, you know something special is about to happen. And what can I say, the second track "Epicentre" knocked down "Afterfire" to a second place on my list of favourite VNV songs. It's just absolutely brilliant. There are also a lot of instrumental tracks on the album, like "Electronaut", a six-minute energetic track that makes you wish you were on a dancefloor right now. A real floorfiller I would say. However, the album in full tends to get a little bit boring now and then, because it's pretty slow most of the times. Don't get me wrong here, I like the slow ones as well, but a few more aggressive tracks in the line of "Joy" wouldn't have hurt. One track that surprised me though was "Structure" which doesn't sound like a VNV Nation song at all. It's in fact filled with industrial noises and such and if a bigger part of the album sounded like this it would be really great! I think VNV Nation once again are on the right track, and I really hope they will continue this way...

I think is a album made for the stage. Maybe the best concert i´ve ever seen. But "Empires" gets 10.

Blinded by FLA and TSDF

This album is so weak compared to bands like Frontline Assembly and The synthetic dream foundation, that I feel it has nothing to do with the gothic industrial scene.....pop crap.

I´m a big fan of VNV but this album compared to the earlier ones are not quite as good. I still like it but not as much as PTF and Empires. AAF on the other hand is a classic and can not be compared to these ones... :-)

I've always liked VNV but I was quite dissapointed with Futureperfect... but, listening to it for a while now, I just like it more and more. Great album. Looking forward for the enxt one - Ronan just needs to drop his attitude slightly.

"Structure".

I will give Futureperfect 7/10. I prefer Empires, but have to agree that "Epicentre" and "Electronaut" are brilliant. However, my real question is, do you know anything that sounds similar to "Structure"? I _can't_ get enough of that song! =/ Please email me.

VNV Nation have got it in spades

This album is an almost spectacular display of EBM music. Epicentre is a perfect song and easily a favorite after playing it once. In fact, that song was on the Metropolis 2002 compiliation and it piqued my interest in the group. While Epicentre is definitely the best song on the album, there aren't many songs that disappoint either. Electronaut is definitely a song for the dance floor. The other songs on this album can go either way, but there are plenty of good songs. I would have liked more heavy songs, but this album is definitely a great album.

few brilliant songs in a huge pile of crap

those really brilliant are epicentre, electronaut, holding on and beloved. carbon musically is also brilliant but has lame, fucking lame lyrics about 'how people are kiling everything'. this is cheesy. we all know that shit, there's no need to sing about that. i prefer instrumental only version from promo. everything else SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

a great, great work

What can i say that no one had said yet?? This is a great work with very great songs. Of course there are any songs a little less brilliants, but the other ones are wonderful. I am waiting for the next album now.

Could have been better... or worse.

I always find it interesting that people will either love VNV Nation, or hate them. You won't find too many people who like some songs, and not others. It's either all, or nothing. This isn't a bad thing -- I've my own reasons for giving this 6/10 (partly because there are too many songs similar to those they have done in the past). But it's just very interesting that VNV Nation have divided the masses so sharply into two opinion-camps. You really don't see too many bands with the power to do this.

VNV kept the good level...

Mattias Andersson, a y crazy? Y sad that Advance And Follow is a master piece?! I think it is a copy of old classic EBM... VNV for me starts with Priase The Fallen(8,0). EMPIRES IS THE MASTER PIECE!!!(10,0!!!) Futureperfect(7,5). But i respect the opinion of all...

Ronan should be count himself bloody lucky that Nitzer Ebb doesn't exist anymore because if they did, they'd be getting large chunks of his royalty checks. I really like the new song where Ronan tries to do the "voice" that the Ebb used to do, you know, the Bon voice. People find this band to be transcendent? I have the most fun trying to figure out how much step recording is employed by this band. There is nothing "live" about them at all. Push button pop, there's your description.

Give me Structure and cut the rest

Don't get me wrong. I like VNV Nation. I really do. This album however makes me yawn and wish for something else, something like the "Structure". The other tracks on this album is more or less Ronan Harris getting high on his own voice, which is less exciting than ever. And don't get me started on the lyrical content. As I started: I like VNV Nation. That is why I don't give this album a lower rating.

Not the obvious progression

I can pretty much say that I am a huge fan of VNVN, but not a old fan cause I began with EMPIRES which I still think today is the best EBM album I've ever heard...I've come to like the older material quite a lot too, but EMPIRES will proabably be more or less impossible to surpass in my opinion. FUTUREPERFECT is really not the obvious follow-up I had expected. I actually put it away for some days after having been disappointed the first times I listened to it. But after some days I picked it up again and this time probably more aware of what I was going to be hearing. This time I took it for what it was..songs like structure and electronaut suddenly didn't annoy me anymore (being so short and all). Many complains can be heard about Genesis, but after HOLDING ON and CARBON I think it really works...the song I still cannot understand quite why people like so much is BELOVED...first half is good but then suddenly it's a typical mainstream trance hit of some kind. This part frightens me a little...I really hope VNVN can hold on to its roots and not go all trance on us. You can sometimes get that feeling in some songs, but I think they manage to keep it on the right side of things. I still don't understand the track 4 AM...other than that it's a little "dark diversion" before Beloved comes along...I guess beloved and Fearless will do great on concerts. But well, beloved is really the only song that makes this album not great..but that's me. It's really good and every VNVN fan should get it no doubt...but I guess it will be a little disappointment for the hardcore EBM fans...they should check out Assemblage 23 who sounds more like the VNVV I had expected to hear after EMPIRES. Other than this I just have to say that Ronan really sounds like Phil Collins at times...maybe it's just me.(?)..but that's still not a bad thing. Ronan is also more positive on this album than on EMPIRES...that is good and bad. I still like EMPIRES better since it got more "whole songs", but FUTUREPERFECT is not far away..maybe with one or two more songs like LEGION or standing still I would have been ecstatic. But yay, gotta love VNV for actually being the positive dark force it is. I'm proud to say that I'm a big fan.

Much better than I expected

My expectations were low after the terribly plain single Genesis. The album is suprisingly good, even though it´s not as good as Empires. It sounds a bit harder than before and it´s mouch more dancable.

Still doesnt beat Allied vision or FLA

Not really my thing really, it lacks the complexity and aggresion that EBM MUSIC SHOULD HAVE grrrrrrrrrrrrr !

VNV Nation back to #1
Name: Pedro Viterbo (194.65.14.75)

I'm listening to Futureperfect for the 3rd time and I'm loving it more and more. I thought that this album would be in the same musical direction that Empires was, but no this is a very diferent album and I'm glad with it. The songs are very diferent and Ronan transmits more sentiment with his voice. My fav songs are the 2nd "Epicentre", 6th "Carbon" and the 11th "Beloved". VNV Nation only can get better and better. Thanks for another great album
