When I got this Neuroactive album, I was quite eager and hopeful since this band have done a number of great electro songs in the past. At a first listen you immediately notice the great production and sound quality - it surely sounds professional. The vocals are superb - Mr. Karjalainen sure has a nice voice, making me think of Covenant, and he also knows how to use it.
The album starts with "Play" - a decent song, making me think of Assemblage 23. It is a strong track indeed and should appeal to the masses. Although, I know that this was not what I wanted to hear from Neuroactive! Holy mother! Is this another talented band falling down the future pop drain? "Quiet Afternoon" follows, which is a much better song and feels very truthful. It continues like this - they mix the sellout stuff, like the horrible "Wonders of The World", with the good stuff, like "Was It Worth It" and "Strangers to A Life", leaving me confused and disappointed. Another thing which disturbs me is that it sounds pretty much the same throughout the entire album resulting in a slightly sterile and impotent album. It is not all darkness, though. Sometimes, they sound like The Mobile Homes could have sounded if those guys would have chosen another path many years ago.
I can establish that this is a must have for fans of modern electropop and future pop. Personally, I suggest you forget about this album and buy Neuroactive's "Neurology 1994-2000" or "Fiber-Optic Rhythm" instead. I cannot help but wondering, what is next to come from A Different Drum? Snap's "Rhythm is A Dancer" remixed by La Bouche?

You know, most times, I agree with Johan when he rips into a release, because most times, he's right. He brings to attention little subtleties about an album that I may not have picked up on, had they not been pointed out. There are some times, however, that we're not on the same page. This album is a perfect example of that. Neuroactive have high production value, yes, and sometimes on this album, they do sound like a future-pop band. There is still this core essence, however, that will always (hopefully) separate Neuroactive from your generic type-A future-pop acts -- part of it is in the way they write their songs, and the other part is the fact that K. Karjalainen's voice is always top-notch. J. Tuohimaa's programming is pretty good on this album (though I will admit that "Wonders of the World" isn't my favourite song here, and I cannot fathom why they picked that one as the last single, I would have picked "Was It Worth It" but that's just me...), and for me, it's just enjoyable. So, in summary, Neuroactive can't do wrong by me, as this is the latest in a line of their releases that have pleased me... and Johan, I did disagree with you on the HIM "Razorblade Romance" review, too, but I'll leave that one alone, for the sake of not making myself look to be an idiot. :)

its no phonic trace.

i prefer the slow songs on this release, which is unusual for me. they are sincere and have some great melodies. but overall its just not as catchy as "phonic trace" or "fiber optic rhythm"
