Lacrimosa are back with a new album, this time without a full orchestra, but still with lots of classical, orchestral elements. The musical style on "Fassade" is instantly recognisable. Tilo Wolff has not changed his concept from the last couple of albums at all. This is probably great news to all die-hard fans, but I think it is becoming a bit worn-out by now. "Fassade" contains the kind of bombastic, symphonic music we are used to. It is melodic, and it alternates between metal and neo-classical music. It is so dramatic that the music borders on cheesiness, but due to his extreme talent, Tilo manages to stay on the right side of the border.
"Fassade" reminds me of "Inferno", which I think is the best Lacrimosa album yet. The opening track; "Fassade - 1. Satz", sets the tone: slow and heavy, with vocals oozing with desperation and hurt. The album then continues in a fashion quite reminiscent of a classical symphony. The tempo, intensity and sentiment of the music changes back and forth between fast and slow, heavy and soft, desperation and melancholy. The symphonic impression is further enhanced by the return of the "Fassade" theme. In the middle of the record is "Fassade 2. Satz" and the closing track is "Fassade 3. Satz".
"Fassade" is in many ways a brilliant album. The music is made with astonishing skill and effort, and Tilo Wolff has, in my opinion, a very good voice. Still, I cannot seem to really get into the music. There is a bit too much of everything and that makes me feel a bit distanced from it. The album also feels a bit like a repetition of previous successes. However, "Fassade" will certainly satisfy the fans and it is, undoubtedly, a beautiful album.
