My Dying Bride are back with the second and last album in their compilation series "Meisterwerk", logically entitled "Meisterwerk II". I've never been too excited about compilation albums, especially not the kind of 'best of' records that Peaceville now seem to produce in full scale. My Dying Bride are indeed a great band, but this compilation does not feel like any masterpiece to me, more like an attempt to squeeze more money out of the fans who have waited quite a while for something new.
What I wonder is which the targeted audience should be? If it is aimed to be an introduction to the newbies then it is a total failure, since no one except the real die-hard fans would enjoy tracks from the first demo tape. If it is targeted towards the fans, then why include so many tracks that they most likely have on other albums?
Three very fast and mean tracks from the early days have also been selected for this album, one being the previously unreleased "Follower". The mixture of tracks just feels annoying and odd, so I really recommend you to buy the complete albums instead of this.
There are still some great material featured on this disc. No one can possible resist the moody "Sear Me MCMXCIII" and the beautiful "Two winters only".
Other enjoyable stuff on this album are the two hard-to-get-by cover tracks "One Velvet Morning" (Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood) and "Roads" (Portishead), of which My Dying Bride make their own tasteful versions. The video for "For You" is also included on this disc as a bonus CD-ROM track. Apart from the later mentioned candy, I don't find anything that would make me go out and buy this album.
