Covering twenty years of goth history and some of the greatest bands that has ever existed is a daunting task in many aspects. "Chronology of a Love Affair" is dedicated to gothic music and its scene in general. What the band has tried here is to keep the charm of the originals but playing them as if they were new Love Like Blood songs. They succeed to some extent.
As in most cases regarding covers, the originals are rarely exceeded by the new versions. This is also the case on this album, but I found some of the covers of mainly the harder acts to be really enjoyable. The more sensitive, agony-filled tracks like "A Strange Day" by The Cure doesn't come out that great however. Love Like Blood succeeds musically, but the vocals could be better on many of the tracks.
My favourite song is actually the only song that isn't a cover - the remake of Love Like Bloods own "Injustice". Other highlights include Paradise Lost "True Belief", Bauhaus "She's in Parties", Killing Joke "Love Like Blood" and Joy Division "Decades". I must say that I find it a bit questionable to include a Marilyn Manson cover here.
"Chronology of a Love Affair" is a nice concept that doesn't go all the way but suits as a declaration of love to some of the best bands ever. And that's what it is all about.
If you are a fan of harder guitar goth and don't have anything against new interpretations of old classics, then this collection is something for you.
