The Canadian ”Nightmare before Christmas”-rockers The Birthday Massacre are back with an album that many have been waiting for. Their popularity has grown steady for each album - “Pins and Needles” is the fourth full-length in order and besides that they’ve managed to release two EP’s and a live album.
The sound of the new album resembles a lot to their previous “Walking With Strangers”, maybe a logical consequence since both albums have been produced by Dave “Rave” Ogilvie. The wall of sound is there, the massive guitars are there, the synth melodies drowned in reverb are there and last but foremost - Chibi’s girlish vocals are there. What differ are the heavy riffs – they’ve become even heavier on this album. For instance, the intro riffs on “In The Dark” could easily be mistaken for being played by Adam Jones in Tool. This heavier style is however in my opinion one of the weak points on the album. A more serious matter is the lack of strong melodies and good songs in comparison to the former albums. The sound is there, but the melodies aren’t and that makes it a rather mediocre album - if it wasn’t for a few exceptions – and I love exceptions. “Shallow Grave” and “Pale” saves this album from mediocre to rather good.
