How do you make a Hocico song?
Start with a loop with desolate sounding synths and lots of reverb. Add samples with persons whispering something in Spanish. Turn on the bass with shuffle rhythm and the four on the floor drums. Finally scream like hell in your distorted mic.
Ok, maybe I’m being too ironic, but this was the first that came to my mind when listening to the first track “Dog Eat Dog” on this CDS. The song is actually quite good (and deserves a good rating) but it sounds like I’ve heard it before. The second track “Escape The Spell” is on the other hand more interesting and proves that the band after all isn’t a cliché of themselves.
After the two Hocico songs follows four remixes of “Dog Eat Dog” by Arsch Dolls, Aesthetic Perfection, Solitary Experiment and Diabolic Art.
The remix that stands out is the Arsch Dolls version. It’s a real aggrotech treat. The song is in the same pace as the original but they removed the layers of reverb and added some crazed synths and metal work – really good.
Solitary Experiment (Doggy Style version) is trying to make a futurepop/techno version of the title song but the mix doesn’t blend at all and confirms that Hocico doesn’t belong in the futurepop/techno genre.
