May is here and it’s time for the annual label compilations. Out of Line has of course got one and this year it’s called “Electrostorm”. It seems that they have abandoned their old “Awake the Machines” series.
With a bunch of well-known names tied to the label the expectation of what this compilation has to offer is really high, names like And One, Combichrist, Hocico and Client for instance. The variety of styles on the album is spread into the electro, aggrotech EBM, synthpop, Doc Martens-old school-EBM and theatrical-electro. There are lots of ups and downs on this album and here is an overlook.
First of all is the big exclamation mark Aesthetic Perfection with the track “The Ones”. It’s a slow paced somewhat characteristic American tune, almost towards the synthpop side of the electronic scale. It’s hard to put the finger to why it’s so good and that’s a reason to like it even more. More nice synthpop tracks are the brilliant track from Ashbury Heights “Smile” and Elegant Machinery’s “Bleeding Words” - a song in their traditional Speak & Spell style. I’m not fully satisfied with the contributions from And One and Auto-Auto. I suppose I expect better stuff from them.
Aggro-EBM is represented by Combichrist, Hocico, Amduscia, Agonoize, The Cyberchrist Project and Kriminal Minds. Here Amduscia’s “Perverse Party” is the brightest star followed by Combichrist’s “Scarred” and Hocico’s “Fed up”. All of these tracks are perfect for the harsh electro dance floor. The Cyberchrist Project’s track is on the other hand is really bad.
On the theatrical side of the electronics on the album are Die Form, Blutengel and Kirlian Kamera. Here the flips and flops are miles away from each other. I can’t really understand why Blutengel and Kirlian Kamera still exist. They’re not good. Die Form has a decent track with the harsh decadent “Slavesex (XXX version).
Swedish old school EBM has grown to be a force to be reckoned with. OoL has signed a few and on the album you can find Turnbull A.C’s (with Pontus Stålberg from Spetsnaz) and Container 90. T A.C’s is a bit rougher on the edges and has a more direct approach than Spetsnaz. T A.C’s’ “Man Made Modern Machines” is a good track but doesn’t reach the higher side of the grading scale. Container 90’s “Clean” is more on the demo scale. Not bad but the production could be much better.
Client is one of the biggest names in the electro genre but doesn’t reach high with their “Can You Feel (Kindle Remix), a meaningless version of their single that just passes by. Din [A] Tod could also be categorized as electro with their “Glory in the Highest”, but that track is also one of the low points on this album.
