With 25 years behind them as a band KMFDM are still surprisingly productive. After a career of konstellations and guest artists the krew that Kapt'n Konietzko kommands is now relatively konstant. After a short break up in 1999 and the presumptive goodbye in "Adios" one could confirm that there are relatively few surprises offered. From the mentioned "Attack" and forward the sound and the structure of the albums are very similar. As a faithful fan since 1990, it feels great that KMFDM are still vital and releases albums like nothing's happened. On the other hand I wouldn't
say I get that excited every time an album shows up. Nowadays there are usually 4-5 songs that are great and the rest feels like they are there to fill up the album. The same goes for "Blitz". At first... But... When writing about it I have listened endlessly to be able to be fair in my review. I must say the album has grown on me.
The obvious killer tracks are "Bait & Switch" with Lucia Cifarelli on vocals and "Davai" where Konietzko sings in Russian, which along with the first song on the album "symbol" (perhaps translated into "Up Uranus") and the song "Never say never" are these well known songs if you have followed the band. "Being boiled" is a song that takes me back to the early days and really grows the more you listen to it. The same goes for "People of the lie", a slow and beautiful song with a bridge that won't leave the head. It reminds me of the song "Anarchy" from the 1997 album "Symbols". Probably
because Konietzko sings pretty similar to Tim Skold in his parts. "Strut" and "Bitches" are two other songs worth mentioning which gives the album a solid contradiction to my prejudice. I wouldn't go as far as measuring "Blitz" with the brilliant "Nihil" from 1995 but it's well over my expectations. I guess this means I have a bunch of albums made on this side of the millennium that I have to give another chance.
Trivia: The above mentioned Tim Skold didn't contribute to any song writing on this album due to previous membership in Marilyn Manson but he is included playing various instruments. See also the new album "Skold vs KMFDM" which should be out soon.
Question: Does anybody hear a sample of The Sisters of Mercy smash hit "Temple of Love" in the song "Bitches" or am I imagining?
