A couple of years ago, I'd always fall asleep listening to music. The problem with falling asleep to music, as anyone who has tried will know, is finding an album to fall asleep to. Most of the time you'll end up programming away half a CD or, God forbid, put a song on repeat until it becomes so irritating you can't sleep for the rest of the night. "The Sleeping Lines" is a product of this observation. Plink is Scott Evans and Brad Derrick experimenting in quiet music. Ambient, slow pieces that won't get you excited, but well arranged and produced.
Somewhat more attention catching are the vocals, provided by Kate Cronin. Striking a serene, angelic cord the album opens beautifully with "undo" that's quite enchanting. Sweeping over soft clicks and warm sounds the song is rather soothing and also the best on the album in a close race with "mary antonia" with more rapid and complex percussion, brighter vocals and more soothing - a bit like Múm actually, but more hazy. And that's the real problem with this album, it's overly hazy. It's difficult to listen to from beginning to end without losing interest over periods of it. If there's an album I'd like to compare "the Sleeping Lines" with it would be Sigur Ros' "( )", an good album both musically and for purposes of falling to sleep to. While "( )" in my opinion is a better album, Plink has come up with a pretty good compliment that serves the same purpose without being a carbon copy of it.
