Iambia
Moving Hands had the opportunity to catch up with Iambia who when we spoke were in Gothenburg, Sweden, celebrating the release of their new full-length album “Anasynthesis” on Progress Productions. Iambia are the duo Dimitris D and Elsa P.
First of all I want to congratulate you on your new album. An album I find intriguing, with industrial EBM as the main ingredient, but also elements of trance/techno and goth. Any comment to that?
- Thank you for your kind words. It is really encouraging. Definitely our focus is in the EBM scene but you can clearly find elements of techno and trance in our music.
How would you describe your music and your musical influences?
- We always try to make straightforward music, intense and powerful in some way, but not easy to listen to. You can for sure call that EBM-industrial but we try to incorporate some modern elements from the techno trance genre. We admire acts such as Dark Soho, Fixmer, Combichrist, Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud. Generally we listen to very diverse kinds of music.
Iambia have their roots in the second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki in the northeast part called Macedonia, once home to Alexander the great. Greece is generally associated by non-Greeks with sun and blue oceans and not with hard-hitting EBM.
Do you find the musical climate inspiring in Thessaloniki? Are there other bands in your league there or do you find yourselves alone?
- Thessaloniki can be a very hard living place at times but there is always the opportunities to have a peaceful life if you choose to. The electronic scene in general has grown up in the last years but there are not any other bands on this so-called EBM scene. Our fellow bands such Siva Six and PreEmptive strike01 live in Athens and Crete.
Can you describe the work progress and your individual roles when you are creating?
- Everything starts from scratch, which might be a drum loop, an atmosphere sound or whatever. Then, building upon the mood it creates, we try to build a whole sequence of sounds and make the final composition. After the tracks are done musically I try to find the right vocal lines that fits every song. I never use the same way of singing in every song.
What are your most precious equipment or programs in your studio?
- The most precious equipment is my computer along with the sound card and AD-DA converter from RME (Multiface with an ADI-8). The heart of my studio is Logic Audio, which is a heaven to work with.
How come you hooked up with the Swedish label Progress Productions?
- I've had a friendship for the last years with Mr Torny Gottberg since he was working for Energy Rekords. When he started Progress productions we decided it was about time for the Anasynthesis album to be released.
What are the future plans for Iambia?
- Our future plans are to establish our name in this crowed EBM scene through hard work and quality music.
