Report from The Subspace Encounter
For the 9th time and 5th time at the Malmö Festival, SubSpace Communications arranged The SubSpace Encounter. A music festival as a part of the Malmö Festival. It took place at Bastion Uppsala Friday the 20:th of august.
Earlier years we have seen groups as Statemachine, Backlash and Interlace. This year SSC presented Run Level Zero, Pluxus, Kitty & the K, Universal Poplab, Necro Facility, Alice In Videoland, Univaque and as headline Covenant.
The first group on stage was RLZ. This I’ve been looking forward to because I really like their latest album, Walk the psycho[path], a lot. Unfortunately my expectations didn’t fulfil. It felt like they haven’t rehearsed. The music is very good, but their show was not that good. One explanation can be that they played first at the festival – there weren’t much people and it was still broad daylight.
Universal Poplab did a much better gig. Christer Lundberg (the singer) had great contact and he was flirting wild with the audience. They played a variation of both old and new songs, like “Casanova fall” and “We hate it when our friends become successful”. And when Kitty (Kitty & The K) appeared on “New baby boom” the crowd went crazy. She did a very god job.
The highlight of the evening was, of course, Covenant. Even for me. I don’t know how many times I have seen Covenant but it is at least 10 times. And I enjoy see them every time. But this time they weren’t good. Eskil (vocals) lost the lyrics. And I’m quit sure that he had sung these lyrics before. But in the end it was a good concert from the greatest synth band Sweden has got.
We could even see a new band from Karlskoga, Necro Facility. When I got their demo I thought, “Hmm, this is good, this I will listen to at TSE”. Unfortunately I was quit disappointed. The music is really good but the singer (sorry Oscar) is screaming too much. You can’t hear what he says.
At the end of the evening I were quite satisfied with evening. I have seen (almost) eight bands. And I think that the others almost 2500 are agreeing with me. The weather was great apart from the rain two minutes before Kitty & The K began. There was only one thing I missed this night. There was no DJ. I believe that almost every visitor at the festival would appreciate a dance floor. I hope that SSC will think of that 'til next year.
