Z Prochek.

Z Prochek.

Intelligent, dark and truthful

Z Prochek are a Swedish duo that have an electronic sound, resembling a mixture of Covenant, Assemblage 23 and harder industrial elements, such as distorted voices. So far they have only released a self-produced demo cd; "A Digital Autopsy" and participated on a compilation; "Monument/8" released by Powerspot. They will also contribute to a new compilation being released by a South African label .

When hearing them at mp3.com a while back for the first time, I was surprised by the appealing sound; the vocalist's excellent voice supports the modern EBM-sound very well. So, I thought we would surprise them and have a short chat.

Tell us a bit about what is going on?
- Well, Memento Materia are showing an interest in us, and if everything goes as planned, we'll start working on a full length album that will be released sometime during 2002. A few other record labels have also been showing interest. One in Poland and one in Canada.

So who are Z Prochek?
- Z Prochek are Johan Otterheim [vocals/lyrics] and Martin Skånberg [keyboards/lyrics]. The name Z Prochek was taken one evening when we were sitting at a café, talking about how to get a good name for the band. For some reason they had Russian newspapers there and we noticed the word "Prochek" in one of them. We wanted the sound of our name to be representative for the music we make and thought that "Z Prochek" would be just that. The word "Z Prochek" has no real meaning in itself, it's more about the association you will make between the music and the name.

Johan and Martin go on telling us about how it all begun.
- We started creating music together for about a year and a half ago. In the beginning we were experimenting with guitars and keyboards trying to find a sound we both liked, but we didn't really get satisfied so after a couple of months we decided to go purely electronic. Since then we have been refining that sound.

When it comes to influences, the answer was no surprise to me, having heard their songs.
- We basically enjoy the same kind of music - bands like Neuroticfish, Covenant, Suicide Commando, Hocico, Nine Inch Nails, Dismantled, Razed in Black, VNV Nation, Zeromancer, Apoptygma Berzerk...the list can be made long.

Who writes the music, and what inspires your choice of lyrics?
- M: I basically write all the music, using keyboards and computers. Most of the lyrics are written by Johan. The inspiration comes from real life experiences and emotions. The content is sometimes rather symbolic and are for the listeners to interpret in their own way.

-And so far, what has media and listeners thought of you? Have you got any response?
- To be honest, this is our first magazine interview. The response from people that have heard us, either on the net or in some other way, has been great, though. The positive response has really inspired us to continue making our music!

To conclude the interview, I thought I'd ask them about any upcoming live performances.
- We are planning to perform live as much as possible during 2002 after we have completed some decent songs. Hopefully, we will be performing at an event in Luleå, Sweden in May.
