Two symbols of submission?
Run Level Zero is a quite new name in the EBM scene. They recently released their debut album "Symbol of Submission" and we felt it would be suitable to have a chat with the two gentlemen from the band, Hans and Fredrik.
So, tell us about you? Who are you?
- Well, we are two guys from Stockholm making music and have done so
for some years. When we are not making music we are making money.
These two things are quite bipolorized at the moment,
How long have you been around making music?
- The first Run Level Zero song was written in late December 1999. We have
been regularly making noises and recording them since 1996. On our tapes
we have a collection of well over 250 original songs.
How did it feel to get signed?
- Well, it was great! We have a deal with an American label called DSBP
and a European one called Prototyp which is a sublabel to Memento Materia.
The labels really supports us and we have great freedom in our musical expression
and development.
Influences?
H: - Well, my musical taste is quite diverse and I do like Coil, Skinny
Puppy,
Miles Davis, Portion Control, Devo, Stravinsky, Front Line Assembly, David Bowie,
Queen, Depeche Mode, Cabaret Voltaire, The Klinik, Swedish folk music,
Front 242 etc. I also like folk music from the middle-east and eastern Europe.
F: - It's very hard for me to state any obvious influences, because
there's so much great music and I listen to stuff from all over the
spectre. My record collection is quite schizophrenic. Anyway I think
the bluesiness in some songs by Einstürzende Neubauten is very close
to my musical "red line". Artists that have had an impact on how I
listen to music include Nitzer Ebb, Tori Amos, Skinny Puppy and
Missy Elliot. The last couple of months I've been listening to a lot of 70s rock like David Bowie, Velvet Underground and stuff like that.
How has the response on the debute album, Symbol of Submission been?
- Overall really good. One reviewer certainly didn't like what we're
doing, other than that we've had positive response from the media. We
also had a lot of great response from our listeners.
Noticed any tracks that really go home among the listeners?
F: - The most danceable tracks are always those preferred by reviewers
and other listeners. They probably have the most love-at-first-listen
appeal but we believe some of the down-tempo songs on the album will
stand out and make a deeper impression after hearing them a couple of
times.
H: I think that everyone has their own favourite song. I haven't heard
two people mentioning the same Run Level Zero song as their preferred
track!
What gives you your inspiration for your lyrics?
- Mostly the things we see around as and in ourselves. There is no single
source of inspiration though.
Moving Hands thank Run Level Zero and wish them good luck in the future!
